Even man, as a woman, can and must respond to the needs of cosmetic improvement and correction of bodily imperfections, without embarrassment, shame or risk of being judged as “affectted” by narcissism or disorder of his own virility. These are maladies and commonplace stories that sometimes fill the gossip of individuals who are not aware of the relevant proven psychological, social, work and economic benefits derived from plastic surgery when it is recommended and practiced according to science, conscience and common sense.

There are numerous aesthetic interventions that lend themselves and achieve good results even if they occur in male bodies.

Among them, abdominoplasty and abdominal lipoaspiration, are the most sought-after; they allow to re-emphasize abdominal muscles by eliminating the excess of fat and overlying skin.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty involve the removal of excess skin and orbitary fat, which protrude in the form of “eyelid handbags” through the periocular area. Often, this procedure is also associated with cantoplasty or cantopexy, which improve and render the shape of the eye more tapered.

Another important plastic surgery procedure for men is that for gynaecomastia. This consists of an abnormally developed breast in the man and causes a more or less feminine appearance of the chest, with obvious effects of embarrassment and emotional discomfort, thereby causing problems in interpersonal relationships. There are three forms of gynecomastia:

  1. True gynecomastia is an excessive development of the breast gland.
  2. Mixed gynecomastia is a double over-development of breast fat and breast gland
  3. False Gynecomastia is an excessive development of breast fat tissue.

Gynecomastia intervention consists of variable combinations of lipoaspiration (closed-loop, minimal engraving) for the fat and ordinary surgical excision as far as the glandular component is concerned, through a cut at the border between the pigmented skin around the nipple and the thoracic skin.

Face lifting allows the face to be more pleasing and youthful by correcting or eliminating the anti-aesthetic features caused by time, sun exposure, daily stress, weight changes, and effects of gravity. Such unaesthetic modifications are manifested with more or less wrinkles around the eyes and the mouth, cheek and nose areas. A typical observation is that the cheeks and jaws tend to fall and fat deposits start to appear mainly around the chin and neck.

Facial lifting helps correct these blemishes by eliminating wrinkles and excess fat, retensioning the facial muscles and flattening the face and neck skin.

Liposuction and lipofilling are increasingly sought by men to have a more dry, pleasing and harmonious body and to remove unwanted fatty accumulation from any part of the body and in particular the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, chin and neck.

Liposculpture represents an evolution of lipoaspiration as it adopts very delicate cannulas to “sculpt” selected areas of the body, for example by recreating the grooves between the abdominal muscles (the so-called “six packs”). Fat extracted with liposuction can be reused and injected to augment depressed areas or parts that the patient would prefer to have larger, for example in the penis, which can definitely increase with fat injection.

Liposuction and body remodeling do not replace an indispensable good dietary and physical life style, however, they can eliminate fat deposits that could not otherwise be eliminated due to their resistance to hypocaloric diet or intense physical exercise.

Otoplasty is the intervention aimed at correcting and repositioning the prominent ears and correcting any other congenital or acquired deformities as a result of traumas, infections or tumors . Examples of deformities in the pinna are the partial or total absence or loss, the size (too small or too larg of the entire pinna or the lobe alone.

Chin and cheekbones remodeling surgery makes it possible to improve the shape and size of the chin, thereby donating superior harmony to the face. Mentoplasty consists of increasing the central mandibular projection using silicone prostheses (augmentation mentoplasty) or reduce (reduction mentoplasty) the size of a chin which is too protruding or too wide. Cheekbones can also be increased or attenuated as needed. For the augmentation implant prostheses are utilized, more or less durable fillers are injected or lipofiling is employed.

Rhinoplasty improves the nose by giving natural harmony to the face, without altering the physiognomy.

It is possible to increase or decrease the size of the nose or nasal tip, to correct the shape of the dorsum (protruding or depressed) or the angle between the forehead and the nose and between the nose and upper lip and finally improve the width of the nostrils.

Rhinoplasty also helps to correct congenital or acquired post-traumatic defects and respiratory problems. If there is a nasal septal deviation, it is necessary to proceed simultaneously to a “septoplasty” operation in order to remodel the deviated nasal septum.

The increase in volume of the calves makes it possible to give a more acceptable volume to hypotrophic (small) calves after the patient has tried in vain to develop them through proper exercise and diet.

For the man who wants to approach the more “delicate” world of aesthetic improvement of face and body, there are many delicate and less invasive techniques of aesthetic medicine, among which are the injections of hyaluronic acid, an innocuous filler, safe, healthy and absorbable.

Possible sites of injection are:

  • Volume and contour of the lips.
  • Folds (eg nasal-labial ones).
  • Wrinkles (forehead and oral corners).
  • Periocular wrinkles (“crow’s feet”).
  • Sculpture of the face contour (eg chin, cheekbones and cheeks).
  • Scars
  • Rhinoplasty results.

The volumetric increase effect is immediate and lasts from 2 to 12 months. The treatment is repeatable as needed or desired, under the guidance of the specialist doctor.

Botulinum toxin is a drug that temporarily blocks or temporarily suppresses the mimic muscles of the face, thus minimizing the appearance of expression wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is used especially for dynamic wrinkles located at the top of the face (eye and forehead). Botulinum toxin is also useful to counteract excessive sweating. The effect of smoothing on wrinkles or decreasing sweating begins to appear after about 5-10 days and lasts from 4 to 6 months. Botulinum is also repeatable periodically.

Dermabrasion is a procedure that smooths skin irregularities by removing the skin’s superficial layer to give it a more even, smooth appearance. With dermabrasion it is possible, for example, to mitigate or improve acne outcomes, although no cure can eliminate them altogether.
